Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

4/28/04
Fishing off of Miami has been steadily improving for the last week or so. The best action has been in the afternoons. We have had decent North current and clean blue water on the edge. We have caught sailfish on practically every trip. Our best day sailfishing we ended up catching 4 sailfish, all in the afternoon. We have also been steadily picking at the kingfish. The big kingfish have not moved in completely. Our biggest king last week was right around 25 pounds, but I did hear of some 40 pounders being caught. Hopefully the big kings will show up in
good numbers soon. There have been plenty of bonitas in the area and mixed in with the bonitas have been some blackfin tunas, but not as many as we should have at this time of year. Live chumming, especially in the late afternoon is a great way to target these fish. The wrecks have also been productive. There have been amberjacks, some groupers and some muttons on the deeper wrecks. Even after all these years of fishing, pulling a big AJ off a wreck is still good fishing.
The night action has been consistent but not red hot for tarpon. We have tarpon fished almost every night for the past week and a half, and we have caught tarpon on every trip. Our best night was three tarpon, but on the average, we have been consistently catching one decent size fish a night. Our biggest fish last week was 150 pounds. Tarpon fishing is good until June in our area, and May is typically a very good month. We haven’t gone swordfishing in a while and we got our chance a few nights ago. Fortunately we had three shots at them, but unfortunately we didn’t land any of them. We are in a great moon phase for swordfish all the way until the end of next week. The full moon in April and May has produced some very big fish for me.
We are also starting our Bahamas trips next week. I am pretty booked in June for the Bahamas, but do have some openings as well as openings in July and August. So whether it is day fishing, night fishing or an adventure in the Bahamas, call me and let set it up!
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
Capt. Dean Panos
