Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
April 24, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

ITS BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS

This past week, we had our first summer Bahama charter. We cleared Customs in Bimini and fish south along Riding Rock the first day. We made the crossing in 1 and half-hours, cleared customs in half an hour, got our hotel room, cast netted pilchards, ran to our first spot and were fishing by 10:30 am. The fishing was phenomenal. We caught yellowtail snappers one after another. The surface fishing with live baits was explosive for large Cero Mackerel (up to 14 lbs.) and large kingfish (up to 35 lbs.). We did a hefty amount of both dead bait and live bait chumming. The mackerel and kingfishing got totally out of control in the afternoon. As soon as we tossed out the live bait chum, huge kings were skyrocketing behind the boat. It was only seconds until you were hooked up to a king or a mackerel. We were in solid fish all day long. Needless to say, the anglers were tired, as was the captain.

After a good dinner, a visit to the Compleat Angler (local bar with lots of fishing memorabilia and hangout of Ernest Hemingway), and a good night's rest, we ventured for another day of fishing. The wind had laid down quite a bit during the night, so we decided to make a long run across the Bahama Bank and fish an area called the Gingerbreads. I associate this area with Jurassic Park - BIG FISH! I didn't believe we could out do the prior days fishing, but we did. It started with the first throw of the cast net. One throw - 600 to 800 pilchards. Again the fishing was non-stop. Large flag yellowtail snapper up to 4 lbs., mutton snapper up to 20 pounds, groupers up to 30 lbs. and kingfish again up to 30 lbs. We missed some kings and hooked one kingfish that would have easily gone over 60 lbs. Most of the kings were so big, that they were biting through #4 wire. We caught a lot of fish this trip but also released as many if not more. Everyone must conserve for the future, and hopefully most anglers will only keep what they can eat. The run from the Gingerbreads to Miami was almost 90 miles, but as good as the fishing was there, it was well worth it.

Fishing the Bahamas is really quite awesome. It could be the fishing trip of a lifetime. It is almost always non-stop action, with quality fish. If interested in a trip (multi day trips only), please call me at (954) 805-8231, (954) 680-5004 for more information. These trips take a little bit of planning, so call to reserve your dates.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
