Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
July 9, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week saw great fishing. Just about everything was being caught. High on the list were dolphin, followed by kingfish, sailfish, wahoo and bonitas.

For the past couple of days, our trips have been identical. We have been running offshore looking for dolphin for the better part of the day. Most of the fish have been between 14 - 25 miles out. The fish have been found mostly under birds, but some of the bigger fish were under debris. Today we limited out on dolphin by a little past noon. The fish caught were all above average schoolies, with most fish between 8 - 15 lbs. We only caught two fish below 8 lbs.

After the dolphin hunt, we headed back to the reef. We caught our limit of kings within an hour. The kingfish have been snakes, with no fish over 10 lbs. The bonitas are also thick on the reef, and kept the anglers busy.

Reports from the other boats have been about the same. The wahoo have shown up, and besides catching them under the dolphin, quite a few were being caught on the deeper side of the reef (500 - 200 ft depth). I heard one boat lose a wahoo of almost five ft. right next to the boat.

The fishing in the Bahamas has also been red hot. Yellowtail have been the hot ticket, with many fish over 4 lbs. The cero mackerel are still around and so are the kingfish.

To me it sounds like fishing is too good to pass up on.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
