Miami - Haulover to Triumph Reef

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
May 20, 2006
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tuna Time

The blackfin tuna are here and the blackfin tuna run is finally underway. Onboard the lucky27 we have been catching a couple on every trip except one. We happen to catch the biggest blackfin on my boat to date at 35#s. We fought the fish for 45 minutes on 20# test. In addition to the 35# we have been catching tuna in the 18-28# range. The little tunny have also shown up mixed in with the blackfin and have stretched several of customer’s arms out a couple of inches longer. We have also enjoyed a good king bite for a couple of days with several boats catching limits of good size kingfish. The sails have been okay in the late evening. We have gotten our bites in the late afternoon. But the sail bite, at least for me, has been a little on the slow side.

When the winds have been from the easterly quadrant we have caught mahi-mahi. And although we did not catch any large fish there were rumors of a 60# mahi and some other larger fish being caught. With the price of fuel hovering in the $3.50 range we pick our days when it comes to dolphin fishing.

On the inshore side the tarpon fishing is still my strongest bite. We have been catching anywhere from 2 -5 fish with several bites that we didn’t manage to connect on. We have been using live crabs for all of our bites. So give me a call and let’s go fishing.
