Summertime Rod Benders

Well it’s officially hot here so that means a changing of the guard in the waters off Miami. Let’s start with the offshore scene. We have been getting good numbers of decent size kingfish. In just my last couple charters we were able to catch several kingfish. These fish have been caught on the deeper side, anywhere from 150-200’ seemed to be the magic depth for these fish the past two days. As the water continues to heat up I will start to look for thermoclines on the fish finder. Then all you have to do is set the downrigger at that depth and wait for the fish to show up. We have also been catching our fair share of false albacore’s. These hard pulling fish are being found anywhere you care to fish off our coast right now. What has slowed down and understandably so has been the sailfish bite. As the water heats up these fish migrate to the north for the coolers waters of our northern neighbors. Although, last summer we were able to catch sails more frequently than you might imagine. We will see if the same holds true for this year.

Next year should be a banner year for mahi-mahi. I know I released about a million undersize mahi-mahi this year and although we caught keeper fish on every trip we had to work at it. On the tarpon front the bite continues to be steady. We are still getting a decent number of shots at very large fish. This is the time of the year when you can find the big bruiser tarpon just a couple of feet off the beach. The only thing better than catching one of these giants is watching the beach clear out once you hook one of these fish and they start to jump and splash just yards away from the swimmers on the beach.
