AS Good As It Gets

This is the type of fishing that we expect for April. Take your pick and you are likely to find it in Miami. The sailfishing is excellent right now. We caught multiple sails on every trip this month except one. And even on that trip we still had our one shot but filled the rest of the day with other species. The dolphin fishing is also red hot. My friend Wayne Burns caught a 51# dolphin while fishing the edge. So don’t be in a hurry to run 15 miles out because you are running right over the very fish you are looking for.

The kingfish are also keeping us busy while they torment the baits on the kite skyrocketing them several times before they finally find their mark. Watching one of these silver torpedoes come shooting out of the water never gets old.

Mixed in with the false albacores are blackfin tuna. These hard fighting tuna are a blast on 20# tackle and always give a good accounting of themselves. Sometimes you have to catch a couple of bonitos before you get to the blackfins. If you really want to target these fish plan for a late afternoon trip as this will give you the best chance for success.

The tarpon have also finally started to show up in good numbers. Right now we are starting the transition to using crabs for bait. This is my favorite time of year for tarpon fishing. This is the time that we get the big bruisers showing up so a 130-150 # fish is not out of the question. The other thing I like is that since we are using crabs for bait there are only two things that will eat a crab. The first is a tarpon and the second is a permit and even in our worst tarpon trip last week we still managed to catch a permit.

Well that is it for now. I get e-mails from some of my customers wanting me to write reports more often. I will try but please try to understand with two young children and fishing full time I sometimes find myself with just not enough time in the day to make everything happen. I’m sure we all find ourselves that way these days.
