Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The cold fronts are starting to roll thru and the bite is heating up. Old man winter is tightening his grip around the northern parts of the state and that means sailfish. We have a good bite going on right now. We are getting multiple shots at fish when the conditions are right. Fishing only 4 hours on Sunday we went 4/5 on sailfish and we also added a couple of mahi for supper. The fish have been slamming baits dangled from the kites.
In addition to the sailfish the mahi bite has been very good. I fished one day with Bill Piper and after losing 2 sails on the kite we decided to head offshore and look for some mahi. The mighty frigate bird put us on our first pair of fish in the mid 20# range. Unfortunately the lines tangled and we lost one of the fish. We were able to land the other one and continued on our way. We kept picking away at the mahi and ended up with several in the box making for a nice end to the day. We are also catching mahi on the reef while sailfishing which is normal for this time of year.
The tarpon are also in. I have had several reports of tarpon being caught on the beach so that is also an option. If the seas are to rough we can always tarpon fish or we can anchor on one of the shallow patch reefs and fish for kings, yellowtail, mutton snapper and cero mackerel. Don't let the weather discourage you some of the best bites come on some of the nastiest days.
This is the time of year were I do combo trips consisting of a couple of hours of offshore fishing and then a couple of hours of tarpon fishing. The great thing about this trip is that you can get a taste of several species in one outing. We could catch sailfish, mahi, and a kingfish offshore and then come inshore for some tarpon fishing.
Well that is all for now. Stay tuned because as we head into season the reports will become more frequent and the bite should only get better.
Till Next Time
Best of Luck…
