Sailfish Action Good Deep

Capt. Carlos Mendez
May 4, 2015
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish action has been pretty good on the deeper side and around 200' - 250'. The problem is getting live baits. As you may know Miami's Government cut and Fisherman's Channel are being dredged and this is affecting the bait migration. Until the dirt settles - literally - bait will be hard to catch. The deletion of Bug Light marker has also left us with a huge void for bait. I suggest that you buy bait from one of the local suppliers and avoid the headaches and frustration of trying to catch your own.

Kingfish have being reacting good to trolled spoons in about 30'-40' beneath the water. Get to the desired strike zone using planers and in line trolling weights.

On the wrecks it has being fairly good. The big jacks react well to the pinfish baits and the Speedo baits. The sharks can be a problem. If so, just leave the wreck and go to another one or come back later to the original one.

The barracudas are back. You might frown upon this fish but with light tackle they are a lot of fun.

The bonitas have been around 130' or shallower. The black fin tunas are deeper in 180' - 250'. Remember that they can be tricky by the boat side as they will circle to keep breathing. A gaff shot in the middle is better than no tuna at all.

The cobias have shown up in ok numbers on the flats. Work for them in an advantage point like the tower to see the shade and the rays. Dolphin have been hard to come around, but if you work 500' - 800- you will find them.
