South Florida Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
May 2, 2014
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

It has been a long time since my last fishing update. Time goes by so fast when you are busy fishing, hanging out with the family and taking care of business. In the past two months I have fished in North Bay, offshore of Miami, in Flamingo, in the Bahamas and in the freshwater canals of the Everglades. All with some great catches and others with mixed results. With the crazy weather we have had all winter long (meaning unseasonable warm conditions) fishing in South Florida has been subpar to say the least. Our fish are as confused as the fishing guides and captains that are trying to find them. With hardly any kind of cold weather and almost no fish and bait migration to speak of fining and catching the fish that we typically find in South Florida between March and April has been a real challenge. With that said many of my recent clients have had some memorable catches.
The two most consistent areas in South Florida have been Flamingo and the freshwater areas of the Everglades. In Flamingo snook, redfish and sea trout have been part of our catches on most trips. We are not catching snookered redfish like I expect we will in just a few weeks. There have been some real nice mangrove snappers biting in parts of the Park and plenty of sea trout. Add to the catch bluefish, big sharks, a few tarpon, lots of jacks and ladyfish and a few tripletail and you can see the action can be pretty interesting in Flamingo. In the freshwater canals of the Everglades catches of over 100 largemouth bass, pickerel, and panfish is and has been a real possibility. Many of the fish are smallish but there have been some quality fish around. All of the action has been with soft plastics and Rapala artificial lures. In North Bay sea trout have been scattered and there are some four to six pound fish caught in recent days. Ladyfish, jacks, snapper, a few snook and tarpon are also available. Baitfish schools have been scattered and tough to catch. Offshore fishing has been real tough with strong winds many of the days, not a lot of baitfish to chum with, clear water and little current it has been tough to put a great catch together. There are some real nice fish being caught but not in numbers. Almost every day some large kingfish, a few sailfish, a few blackfin tuna, a few cobias and dolphins are caught but not all f these fish are being caught each day by all anglers.
