South Floridas Weather Changes Could Spark Our Inshore Fishing!

After almost three months of what I describe and a lot of my fellow captains and guides have described as the worst fishing in South Florida in recent memory we may be seeing our weather pattern and hopefully our fishing returning to what we are more used to during the winter. Who would have thought that a storm named Sandy would have so much effect on so many people along the east coast of Florida! With unseasonal warm weather conditions leaving us behind and cold fronts lining up the way we expect them too this time of the year it may not be too late for us to salvage our winter fishing season.

Offshore anglers in the past few weeks have seen more Spanish mackerel along our piece of coast then they have all year. These fish had not been close to beach but out in 20 feet of water. Further offshore some large kingfish had moved into the area and sailfish catches have picked up considerably. A few wahoo, blackfin tuna and gaffer size dolphins have been caught in the past few weeks. Tilefish continue to be available in the deep water. Tarpon have been feeding along the beaches and in the ocean inlets but recent rough conditions have made it impossible for me to target them.

Inshore in North Bay small bluefish, Spanish mackerel and jacks have been keeping my clients busy while trolling Rapala X Raps around the few baitfish schools that we have found. Now I am hoping that bigger mackerel and bluefish and more baitfish schools will return to the Bay. Sea trout, bluefish and small mackerel have been holding on a few grass flats in the Bay and have been hitting Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp bait. Fishing live shrimp over the grass flats has been almost impossible due to the large amounts of pinfish that had been on the flats. Hopefully the cold weather will have chased the pinfish off the flats. Snook and tarpon have almost disappeared in the Bay recently. Large jacks are roaming the Bay in search of baitfish schools that have been scattered throughout the Bay. We have had a few red groupers to 20 inches but these fish are still out of season but made for some rod bending action.

Flamingo has had some of the best action with catches of redfish, snook, sea trout, bluefish, mackerel, pompano, jacks, ladyfish, black drum and sheepshead. Key to this fishing has been getting the days with the milder conditions. I have a string of Flamingo charters starting tomorrow and with warmer conditions predicted I am excited by our chances at some great fishing. And as always the amount of wildlife around the Park is always breathtaking. On Monday we were treated to the sighting of an adult bald eagle and a juvenile eagle together.

All of these fish were caught using Key Largo spinning rods, Daiwa Advantage spinning reels, Okuma spinning reels, Shimano spinning reels and Stren and P-Line lines.

What are you waiting for? Pick up the phone and lets go catch some snook!
