Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
It's been a while since my last report and a lot has happened. This is our busiest time of year and hopefully I can recap some of the things we have done since our last report. The boat is doing fine. We just replaced the flooring in November and since then I have replaced all the electronics with the newest and latest from Simrad. We have the new NSS4's and the new Halo 3000 radar. Only way to stay on top of your game is to have the best tools you can have!
Sailfish are still around. April so far has been a great month and the best month of the year for sailfishing so far. We have had quite a few double-digit release days and even more 6 – 9 releases per day. We haven't gotten the 20 fish release day this year and although it is getting a little late in the season, there is still hope.
Besides sailfish, we have done just a couple of swordfish trips and have successfully caught another swordfish in the daytime hand cranking. If you need to catch a swordfish to complete you IGFA slam (catching all the species of billfish) we have the technique and knowledge to do it without the use of an electric reel. For those that just want to catch one, we still offer the electric/manual reels as an option.
I also was able to go to the Bahamas on one trip with my buddies and go chase yellowfin tunas in the channel. We didn't crush it but managed to catch a few real nice size yellowfin tunas. It was a lot of fun and we had great weather.
While kite fishing for sails, mahis have been around almost the whole winter and spring. A week or so ago there were a lot of big mahis being caught. We caught a 31 lb. cow and heard of some up to 55 lbs. being caught. That's hopefully a sign that our summer mahi season will be strong. Last year's mahi season was not that good. Another good sign started yesterday. After hooking a couple of sailfish on the edge and catching a kingfish, the wind died off completely. Even the helium ballon on the kite was not enough for a good presentation. So, we ran offshore a bit after hearing some schools of mahis were being found. Before we even put out a spread, we saw some birds and ran to them. There was a school of 100 mahis under the birds. We caught our fair share before they disappeared. We stated trolling and found another big school of mahis. After that we found another big school. Very promising for a good Mahi season ahead.
April and May are probably two of the best months to fish in South Florida. We do have open dates available so, shoot us and email or give us a call, we also have online booking directly on my website. Book it now and let's Go Fishing!
