Warm days but Hot Fishing!

Capt. Alan Sherman
July 30, 2012
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Snook, Snook and more Snook!

Business in slow the weather has been less than perfect but the fishing when I have been on the water has been very good here in South Florida. Daily thunderstorms with at times gusty winds and quite a bit of rain I believe along with the economy have kept my phone from ringing. I can't really blame my regular clients or others that might have thought about fishing only to see a forecast of more rainy conditions change their minds. In the past few weeks when on the water I have seen stormy morning conditions turn to calm picturesque conditions till late afternoon. The crazy thing here in South Florida is that when we have east winds you can expect calm beautiful mornings lasting till three or four in the afternoon allowing for a nice half day or three quarter day before the stormy late afternoon conditions build up in the west. Many of these storms fizzle out before the move to the inland and Oceanside waters. The others usually don't become a problem until we are off the water and packaged the fillets of fish that were caught that day. On the west coast in Flamingo in the Everglades National Park early morning storms burn off quickly by sailing time and leave us with mirror like conditions as you will see in some of the pictures that I have included in this report. These storms don't regenerate until late afternoon and in many cases push inland instead of out into Florida Bay where some of the best fishing this time of year has been.

Go to my Facebook Page at Get Em Sportfishing Charters to see all of the snook and other species recently caught on the Get Em with Captain Alan Sherman. LIKE IT!

On recent Flamingo charters we have enjoyed nonstop snook action like on yesterday's trip with the Fuji Guide Companies Reps that were working the ICAST show in Orlando this past week. Carl and Kenny released over 15 snook in the six to 14.5 pound range (we lost track of how many at 12 releases) plus three redfish and sea trout. All of the fish were caught on ¼ ounce red Hookup lures tipped with a pinfish or Gulp soft plastic. Carl had never caught a snook and caught so many his arms were aching.

A few days earlier Mike and Brad were looking for snook action like we had yesterday but released only three snook, two redfish, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, jacks and lost an estimated 10 pound tripletail. Some of these fish were caught on fly and Rapala Twitchin Raps.

Last week I had my son on the boat ad we released goliath groupers to 80 pounds, mackerel, jacks, sea trout, cobia, sharks, permit and lots of pompano. We had a 400 pound goliath grouper try and eat a 32 inch cobia right next to the boat.

In North Biscayne Bay I fished with Emma from Norway. Emma represents Mustad Hooks and was in town to do some fishing before heading up to Orlando for the ICASTS. We fished in rainy conditions hitting every spot I could think of that might hold some quality fish. Emma was skilled at casting artificial lures as well as natural baits and quickly subdued snook, bull sharks, barracudas, ladyfish and jacks. Again North Biscayne Bay Marcus, Alan and Michael had nonstop sea trout action catching and releasing over 30 fish to 17 inches using live pilchards fished under a Cajun Thunder float and on Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp.

I have not fished offshore recently mostly because large live baits had been a challenge to catch and because the dolphins had moved over 10 miles offshore.

All of these fish were caught using Key Largo spinning rods, Daiwa Advantage spinning reels and Stren lines.

What are you waiting for? Pick up the phone and lets go catch some snook!
