Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Mosquito Lagoon and the river looks like a bait shop, finger mullet are everywhere. This week we fished the north end (AKA) the woods and caught many trout over the upper slot. Trout are on the drop offs and points ambushing mullet as they travel. Hard body plugs such as the Berkley Frenzy firestick minnow in the black and silver or the red tiger are working well. Toss your firestick minnow in front of the schools of finger mullet and work it just below the bait school. Work it in an erratic motion with twitches resembling a wounded mullet or just crank it. That is why I like red in my lures it resembles blood and gamesters like wounded prey. You will see the trout jacks redfish ladyfish tarpon snook and blue fish crashing the schools of bait. On my last charter we caught twenty one trout four over the upper slot one snook three redfish six jacks and two ladyfish. The storms have been keeping most anglers off the water and it has been much easier fishing with out a bunch of boats in your holes. One other positive note about the storms is the wind; it has been blowing slightly keeping it much cooler when it is usually unbearable this time of the year. High water has made it easy to get around and fish almost anywhere in the lagoon.
Tarpon are at full force in the river and the anglers that are putting in the time are getting the hook ups. Small tarpon are at their usual haunts in the creeks and the big boys are at the jetties, bridges and Indian River. A large mullet, grunt or pinfish will get you a bite from the big ones and the smaller fish are eating shrimp and smaller offerings as mentioned.
Black drum in the lower slot size are on the flats with the redfish and they will take a Berkley Gulp peeler crab or shrimp. Toss your offering in front of the school and get it down before the school reaches your offering. If you toss it to close you will normally spook them. Remember think like a fish to catch fish or just call me. 386-314-5656
