Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon lately has been good for trout, redfish, black drum and a flounder here and there. Since trout season just opened we have been taking our share. We have been bouncing Gulp shrimp rigged on 1/4 oz jigs. New Penny and natural seem to be the color of choice. The key is to work your Gulp bait slow on the bottom. If you work it to fast you will not get the bites you should.
The reds have been happy on the flats with waving tails on the major feeds. They schooled up nice since we have had a few
cold days in the 20s. The reds have been pushing up nicely along the edges of the flats on the rising tide. Fish them slow and don't push them because that will only tighten their lips. Gulp chartreuse pepper sinking minnow and Johnson spoons have been working well. We have been taking a few flounder (up to six pounds) as well in the mix. The last one we caught sucked down a Gulp jerk shad in new penny color.
The Ponce jetties have been giving up some flounder as well with Sheepshead and a few black drum near the rocks. Small crabs and shrimp should do the trick. But if you are a Gulpster like me, use a Gulp peeler crab in the natural color.
