Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Mosquito Lagoon experienced a severe algae bloom around the beginning of July that has turned much of the water green and murky. While this has hampered the sight fishing and made the redfish action somewhat inconsistent, you can still find plenty of tailing and cruising redfish to cast to. The 3" DOA CAL on a 1/8 ounce jighead has been working well for the redfish. Some giant redfish can be found finning and tailing on calm mornings and a Baitbuster worked along the surface will produce a great topwater bite.
In the other Lagoons, the fishing has been spectacular. 50-100 pound tarpon can be targeted on most mornings. Quick accurate casts with DOA's will get many more bites than those soaking live or cut baits at anchor. Have a beefy rod and 20-30 pound braid with an 80lb leader for these fish.
5-20 pound tarpon can also be found in creeks and canals when it is too breezy for the big fish to show. After the tarpon slow down, you can have some of the best catch and release action fishing the bait pods for ladyfish, sailfin catfish, bluefish, trout, and jack crevalle. Use castmaster type spoons with a single hook and a short piece of 30lb 7 strand wire and you can use the same rod all day without having to constantly retie your leader. Look for diving terns and seagulls to give away the location of the fish. When you find them, it is a bite on every cast. This is great fun for kids and adults alike and is especially good for the novice fly angler.
