Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Just got back from Panama City fishing the IFA Redfish Championship. We finished sixth out of a hundred and twenty some odd teams. After a week of pre fishing I knew we were going to be in the middle of a front coming through and we had to catch fish when they were ready, not us. This week in the Mosquito Lagoon the fishing was kinda like Panama City. Timing was every think, moon and tide were key factors. My anglers caught snook, black drum, trout, ladyfish and redfish. With the reds and trout moving away slowly due to the water temp drop, close encounters have been the norm. We have been tossing morsels in front of them and about half the time they eat. I pitched a shrimp in front of a trout about eight feet away from the bow. When the fish turned and sucked that bait at the surface my clients eyes got big as fifty cent pieces, not quite saucers. LOL He was a little over five pounds. We caught reds the same way this week. You will notice the fish moving slower these days as the water temperature plummets into the fifties. We also sight casted to some ten-pound plus black drum in a few different schools. The fish were feeding on their schedule when the moon was right they would eat. When it was not lined up they would give you the fin and keep on swimming.

Fish are in the grass as well as the white sand holes. Toss your Gulp shrimp past your targeted sand hole and crank it into it. Let it fall and you should get tapped by pinheads or the reel deal. The pinfish should be moving to deeper water as I am typing this. The temps are going to drop to the low thirties then back up in a few days. No wonder every one comes here in the winter LOL. Big flounder should be at the inlet, you can bounce a Gulp Jerk Shad or a Gulp Shrimp on the bottom and you should get a few. They eat light so I spool my Abu Garcia 804 with 10 # Berkley Fireline then you can feel everything, even a fish swimming at you. Remember think like a fish to catch fish or just call me,
