Lagoon bait and more bait

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The lagoon has been full of bait these days bringing patient fisherman success.
I had Bill and Pat Griggs out this weekend and the fishing was hit and miss. Go to the right spot and you are nailing nice trout and fish the spot someone else just left without you knowing and you are striking out. We pulled up on one of my favorite drum fishing spots and hooked up seven or eight black drum and a red drum in short time. Most of the micro shrimp went out the *%#^%# well drain so we split Gulp peeler crabs in half with scissors and pitched them to the drummers. We also saw a lot of tarpon rolling while we were catching drum then when the drums were done the tarpon and we were as well. Just as well we were out of the wind and all of us were sweating like boilermakers in a mill. We went and tried the spot the next day and we could not even buy a bite in that spot. I think the gator that was sitting on the shore when we pulled up let out a few grunts and they sounded more like drum than gator. LOL

Speaking of tarpon I have seen more this year than last and it is making me want to target a few. Other fins in the lagoon include but are not limited too. Flounder, snapper, trout redfish, snook, grouper, gag and Goliath pompano ladyfish and jacks. I have seen some pompano skipping north of Campbell's slough. Lots of boats on the water these days and finding one of your old favorite spots with out a boat sitting on it. It is one thing for a legal guide to be sitting in one of your favorite spots but it is salt on the wound when you see a guide fishing without proper licensing in that spot. You know who you are! I had Todd Ulrich out and we pitched Gulp shrimp at tailing reds for instant success. Some days are like this and some are not. We did get chased off the water by a bad storm this day. All I can say is run!

Sorry it took so long getting this report out I have been in the woods for almost two weeks, this is the time of year I take off for stream therapy.
