Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Water levels in the Mosquito Lagoon are very low which means the fish have less places to hide. Despite the full moon, the redfish, black drum, and trout were all feeding this week. We caught them on fly and spin. With all the mullet around, the DOA Baitbuster attracts the attention of both the redfish and big trout. Work it right on the surface some some explosive strikes. We consistently found fish holding in the sandy holes on the flats which had a good supply of baitfish.
For the fly anglers, try using a bendback pattern with gold or copper flash when fishing in heavy grass. A EP style pinfish or mullet pattern has also been effective. You may also encounter schools of black drum while searching for redfish. You will need a crab or shrimp pattern that is worked slowly along the bottom to fool these fish.
Large trout have been active, especially early in the day. This week, we saw trout attacking 8 inch mullet on the flats. Water temperatures are very high and the trout will easily succumb to heat stress if not handled gently and released quickly.
Keep an eye open for rolling tarpon early in the morning. Carry at least a medium heavy rod with some 20lb braid and a leader of at least 40 pounds for a shot at landing them.
Target Species:

Redfish, Seatrout, Black Drum, Tarpon
