Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The water levels in the Mosquito Lagoon have risen significantly over the past two weeks. Higher water allows the fish to spread out and go to areas that had been nearly dry. The same amount of fish are now in twice the amount of water. Find the right spot and you can have some great catching. Spots you have been catching them in, may or may not be holding fish.
The past few trips, we have caught redfish, trout, black drum, jacks, and ladyfish. We had shots at tarpon as well. Tarpon may show up at any place and time during this part of the year. In the morning, I look for them in the deeper water areas rolling on the surface. During the afternoon, you will often see fish over 50 pounds cruising the flats in less than two feet of water. Many of these fish are too large to catch on your average redfish rod and would quickly wear through your light leader. For a chance at catching the larger fish, you need to carry a heavier rod with a leader of at least 50 pounds. I like to tie on a DOA Baitbuster in black and gold.
Trout, jacks and ladyfish have been plentiful along the edges of the flats. Diving terns give away the location of the small baits favored by all three species.
