Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing has been excellent in Mosquito Lagoon. The big redfish are schooling in groups of 50-200 and can be found tailing and finning near deep water edges. These fish can top 35 pounds so have your drag set properly. With water temperatures over 80, extended fights can kill these breeders. If they are not taking line off the spool, it is important for the angler to be getting some back using pressure in the opposite direction the fish is travelling. Live or cut baits such as mullet, pinfish, or crabs work well as will the DOA Baitbuster on the surface. Avoid casting into the school as the fish will spook and quickly stop eating.
Big trout are feeding on the newly arrived schools of mullet along the many sandbars. The trout took the heaviest hit this winter and many of the large breeding females were killed. Trout are much more fragile than redfish and needed to be handled with care and quickly released. Topwater baits are working well in the morning. As the sun comes up, a paddle tailed jig on a lead head or a weedless jerkbait will draw strikes.
Tarpon, jacks, and ladyfish will soon be arriving and the summer action should be outstanding. For photos of recent catches, visit http://www.floridafishinglessons.com/FishingReport.html
