Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Oct 2013 Fishing Report
The fall mullet run is in full effect here on the east coast of Florida with schools both inshore and off the beach by the
thousands. The fishing off the beach has been on fire lately with the tarpon migrating back south following the bait pods
and also in the mix you can find bonitta , sharks , and many other species taking advantage of the easy meal. It's a little
hard to give a report on Mosquito Lagoon when our GOVT has shut the refuge down about a week ago. Before the shut down
the fishing was good with numbers of trout and redfish being caught on all kinds of different baits from top water to live finger mullet.
I like to target the bait pods this time of year starting out the morning throwing plugs and twitch baits in the schools of bait and as the
sun gets a little higher switching to a Aqua Dream Spoon. The breeder redfish can be found around all your major inlets at this time from
Ponce Inlet in Daytona Beach south to Cape Canaveral. Whenever Mosquito Lagoon opens back up you can also find these breeders
in schools from twenty to the hundreds preparing for there yearly spawn. I have also had some good reports of a strong snook bite from
Ormond Beach south to Edgewater and through out the New Smyrna Beach area. When targeting snook I like to look for structure and a must
is moving water I prefer the out going tide but have done well on the beginning of the incoming also. I like to throw twitch baits and soft plastics
with the tide along the edge of the structure almost always triggering a bite. The flounder are starting to move into the backwaters of New Smyrna
Beach and Edgewater. The best method I have found for these flatties are bouncing the bottom with a soft plastic and a 1/8 oz jig head in a
shrimp or mullet color. Target the mud bottom around the oyster bars and points and edges of the sand bars where the bait tends to gather.
Good luck and be safe
