Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Chilly weather has finally arrived to Central Florida this January 2016, water temperatures have dropped to around 60', clearing in the backcountry and flats, and water levels coming down some with north winds behind cold fronts. Redfish forming shallow water schools, mullet have moved south to warmer locations, Seatrout schooling on edges and drop offs, Sheepshead showing up in the backcountry, winter patterns here after an warm start to 2016. Select size live shrimp, hooked at the tail for a long cast, can be the go to bait for our winter Redfish, freelined shrimp and white jigs for drop off Trout. Backcountry mixed bag fishing focusing on deeper holes and channels, and hitting a few flats looking for Reds in between hopping holes. Live small finger mullet when I can catch them with my cast net also on the menu for winter shallow spots targeting Reds and Specks. Repeat clients Tom and Sandy from Palm Coast Florida do trips with me when their 9 year old grand kids come to visit, we usually do mixed bag with young kids, but this time trying our luck with more challenging flats fishing, water was still warmer before the recent cold spell, first spot I picked to try was the right one, 6 Redfish, all from 24" to 29", young Maddox battled the biggest one, with a little help from grandma and me.............................

New clients Rick and Linda from Virginia are avid anglers at home, going on their first Mosquito Lagoon flats trip with me, they are artificial lure enthusiasts so we fished weedless rigged jerk baits for shallow spots and Gulp shrimp on jig head for slightly deeper locations, Linda caught her share of the dozen fish landed, both Reds and Trout............................

Long time regular local clients Dr Ed and Matt came on a flats trip recently, turned out to be a windy chilly day, making for tough conditions, but was a success with each catching a quality Redfish, Dr Ed with his 30" spot tail.............................
