Reds moving up with high water

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

We have been getting pounded with rain and it should be gone for a few weeks. I actually saw the sun for the first time in three days today. The fresh water running into the Mosquito lagoon this week will change things moving fish around mostly the trout. I had 10 inches of water in my back yard flowing for a day or so. All that water is going to raise the lagoon water to where the fish will be way up in the grass. You will see the redfish gorging on fiddler crabs so throw a pattern the resembles the claw of a fiddler crab. I rig a weedles Gulp shrimp new penny in the 3" size and toss it right in the grass at the reds. I use the Gulp peeler crab as well but the shrimp cuts through the grass better. You will see reds cruising up next to or on the islands that dot the north end of the lagoon. I have not been out since the rain started but history repeats it's self. Think of a few of the banks that were lined with marching fiddlers a week or so ago and that is the best place to start if you want a slot size redfish. I know of a few schools of drum that will be on the move to the buffet line as well.

The trout have been on their summer spawn for a few months.
I hope all this fresh water does not kill all the fry that the trout just dumped in the lagoon. I really do not know what it will do to next year's population. But I am sure dumping millions of gallons of fresh water that came from streets and yards carrying other bad stuff fertilizers, pesticides etc. can't be good. The bigger trout can swim to a comfort zone before they are swept away. Tarpon snook and other species are not effected much buy the fresh water. One thing you will have to look out for is floating debris in the water. High winds and high water has loosened a lot of stuff that has been sitting on the shore for a while. Remember think like a fish to catch fish. or just call 386 314 5656
