Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

As has been the case the past several weeks, high winds limited my fishing to only two days this week. Wednesday, the weather was near perfect except for a few troublesome clouds which limited our visibility. Mark, a fly fisherman from the northeast, joined me for a day of fly fishing the Mosquito Lagoon. He was used to tossing his fly into feeding frenzies of stripers and bluefish and was surprized at the wary nature of our skinny water redfish. We encountered multiple schools of redfish throughout our half day trip. All were in less than two feet of water and the schools ranged from twenty to over one hundred fish.
Mark was able to land his first redfish on fly and had multiple shots at other fish. By the end of the day, Mark had learned that even the mere shadow of the fly line in the air can spook the whole school.
Thursday, Capt. Tom Van Horn and I took to the Lagoon with our flyrods. We had a few hours of pleasant weather in the morning that was rudely interrupted by the arrival of a cold front. Four redfish and a flounder were caught and we encountered some reds over ten pounds that showed little intrest in our flies.
The temperatures for next week will be approaching 80 and the fishing should be red hot. As will be the case throught the winter, shallow water and small baits will be the key to catching fish.
