Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Winter has finally arrived here in central Florida. A strong cold front dropped the water temperature to 48 degrees in the Mosquito Lagoon earlier this week. The fish didn't seem to mind all that much, however, it seemed to be more of a bother to the anglers.
With very low water and cool temperatures, the redfish are schooled up throughout the lagoon. Small soft plastic shrimp and crabs fished slowly in front of the school were being crushed by the reds. While most of these fish are from 2-8 pounds, they are providing some great sight fishing action.
This latest cold front should push the big sea trout onto the shallowest flats where they will lie in sand holes seeking warmth from the sun. Sight fishing for these trophy fish requires stealth and pinpoint casting. They can also be caught while wading near shorelines making long casts with soft plastics. A DOA shrimp or a green soft plastic jerkbait will work well. For the fly fisherman, a deer hair slider or a flashy streamer pattern will take some nice fish.
The black drum are still around for those looking for a change of pace. This week, we caught black drum on both fly and soft plastic shrimp. Capt. Tom Van Horn shows of this drum caught earlier this week.
With storms, clouds, and high winds forecast for the next several days, the weekend sight fishing will be a challenge. By mid week, the sun should appear and the tails will be in the air. The crystal clear water can bring some of the best sight fishing opportunities of the year.
