Mosquito Lagoon & North Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Chris Myers
March 25, 2007
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

High winds during the past couple weeks made for some days of tough fishing. On most days, there were fish to be caught but getting a light lure to them with a 15-20 knot wind requires some fancy casting.

The past several days have brought an improvement in the weather with water and air temperatures near 80. This warming trend has flooded the flats with baitfish and the gamefish have been eager to eat. Big trout are spawning in the shallow flats where you find a mixture of sand and grass. Soft plastic jerkbaits or a DOA Baitbuster worked over the sandy areas will catch some nice trout.

Redfish of all sizes are continuing to school in both very shallow water and along the deeper edges of flats and sandbars. This week, we have caught reds using 4" DOA CAL tails in gold and arkansas shiner, DOA crabs, redfish magic spinnerbaits, and cut ladyfish. Now is a great time to fly fish for redfish in Mosquito Lagoon. Practice casting at targets from 30-60 feet with minimum false casts and your catching percentage will increase dramatically. Bendback and small crab patterns are very effective.
