Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
On most trips during the past few weeks, we have been spotting hundreds of redfish per day. Some are schooling and some are have been tailing. The wind has been the most dominant factor and has made casting to the fish difficult for some. If you can manage to get a soft plastic jerk bait in front of the fish, they respond well. I have been adding a Woodies rattle to them and it has resulted in the fishing finding the bait on what would otherwise have been a cast that was off the mark.
Although or fish are plentiful, they do not stick around long once a boat is near. Stealth, and quick accurate casts are needed to catch these fish. Practice your casting at home and you will have a much more productive day on the water.
On a recent trip. Dawn spent her birthday with her daughter Devyn. Both flats fishing beginners, the ladies did not have many bad habits to overcome. By the end of the day, they were sight casting to single redfish better than many of then men. Devyn landed her biggest fish using a spinner bait.
As we move into May, the winds should begin to subside and most morning will begin calm. The numbers of seatrout, ladyfish, and jack crevalle will increase in areas holding mullet in 2-5 feet of water. A DOA Deadly Combo is an easy way to enjoy cacthing a lot of fish in those areas.
