Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Conditions have finally improved in east central Florida after several weeks of high winds and dirty water. This week, we had clear skies, moderate winds and lower clean water making perfect sight fishing conditions.
Monday, I experimented with a new color from DOA designed for the fresh water fisherman. This purple jerk bait named grape holographic flake, was eaten by the first redfish I cast to. Purple is popular with the bass fisherman but is not commonly used when targeting redfish. My test goes to show that proper presentation is usually more important than color.
I also tried out a new DOA shrimp color called morning glory. The body is black with red flake and it has a chartreuse tail. I cast it to a passing redfish and a unseen trout of 24" grabbed it before the redfish could. That is a good problem to have.
Tuesday, British angler Jerry joined me in Mosquito Lagoon. His first attempt at sight fishing was a success as he caught both redfish and trout on 5" CAL tails.
Wednesday, the husband and wife team of AL and Sallie made their first attempt at sight fishing Mosquito Lagoon. They each caught redfish and trout. The debate over who caught the most and biggest is ongoing.
Although trout season is closed in our region for the rest of the year, there will be some great catch and release action for large seatrout throughout the winter. I like to target them in shallow sand holes with four and five inch CAL tails. If you are slow and quiet, you can spot them lying along the edge of the grass waiting to ambush a passing meal.
