Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
September 20, 2000
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Man what a week for drum fishing. The fish we are targeting are the small version compared to the world records we usually seek. We have been taking drum from one to five pounds in the Mosquito Lagoon on shrimp. The mosquito ditches are full of these little black drum that is keeping the action steady. The lagoon is also giving up its share of mangrove snapper on the edges of the channel. The snapper are also in the Indian River. Use finger mullet for best results. We took a mangrove snapper on a mean green slam”R this week on the flats. We saw some nice size pompano on the flats this week but we were unable to get bait in front of them.

The reds are moving a little due to the high salinity level in the lagoon. The rain has poured in for the last few days that will help the salt level go down. We took some nice trout on the flats on the M.G.Slam’Rs this week. Actually we caught more legal size trout on the slam”Rs than we did on pig fish.

Yesterday I caught a tarpon on a finger mullet and jumped five more on the plugs. This is the time to target a tarpon if your are into it. The Indian River is teaming with tarpon and the outgoing tide is the tide to fish in the north end. Cast your offering in front of the rolling fish and hope for the best. Do not try to boat a large tarpon that is still green. These fish can be dangerous if they jump in your boat. Things will break and anglers can get hurt so be careful. Reds are also thick in the river and can be had on finger mullet or Twelve - Fathom Jigs in pearl w/ green back.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
