Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The flats in the Mosquito lagoon are holding some big trout. My charters this past week took some gator size trout on Slam’Rs in the pumpkinseed color. Work the white patches as you pole across the flats. If that color does not work on that particular day then change it. Those of you that want to mess with live bait can sit in a spot on the flats and soak finger mullet. The bite will come, sometimes slow and sometimes quick depending on the moon phases.

The flats are holding reds as well and can be taken in the same methods mentioned above. As the water-cools you will want to slow your retrieval speed down. When you drift or pole a flat, fan cast ahead of your drift to cover the water ahead of the boat. If the wind is blowing you should stake out and work an aria thoroughly if you suspect fish holding there. After working the aria for five or so minutes move on and cover more ground.

The Snoike are still holding in the Indian River willing to eat shrimp, finger mullet and piggish, Betsy Swiser fished with me last week and caught some nice Snook, the biggest one jumped and pulled the hook. She landed four Snook three reds and two trout that were all respectable fish. Fish the moon and tide to get the bite from these line siders. They will not eat as good on the off phases of the moon. Remember you need to have a snook stamp to keep a snook.
