Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wow it’s been an awesome week of fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon and the weather couldn’t be much better. Jeff and Ben Rops fished a morning with me this week and caught four good size trout up to twenty-four inches. Then I took them to the reds where 12-yr. old Ben sight casted to two of his four reds, good job Ben! This day we fished with finger mullet for the most part. The next day we took nine trout and six reds to 27’’. My next trip Larry Venselow fished solo, I had him cast 12 Fathom shad bodies and he caught five trout and five nice reds.
The colors of the 12 Fathom shads that produced the most fish on the flat were crystal. I find the mean green slam’Rs produce more trout and the pumpkinseed produce more reds. The neutral color crystal produces both fish trout and reds on the flats. Work these plastics as slow as possible with out sinking in the weeds. I rig my plastics with a kayle hook placed directly through the bait 1/8 to ¼ inch in from the nose.
The Indian River is still holding some snook around the rocks and docks. Make sure you time your trip to get the tide just moving out. They will feed quick and shut down just as fast as they started. Jacks, ladyfish, trout and reds will be there where the snook rome. Some black drum are also being caught around the bridges and holes. Use a shrimp for the smaller blacks and a blue crab for the big boys.
Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
