Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
April 3, 2001
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Mosquito Lagoon was blown out last week but now we have a little slack from the wind and the fish have been happy, but not as happy as I. Yesterday I had James Houlk, Tina and James sr. out for a half day. They took sixteen reds on eight pound tackle up to thirty- three inches. (I won’t tell anyone that Tina caught the most and the biggest fish). We took the reds on shrimp yesterday; they were willing to eat after we suffered days of low pressure that had slowed things down for a few days. We have been taking some trout, jacks and ladyfish along the clinkers on 12 Fathom Slam’Rs in pumpkinseed colors.

The day before the catch of the day was a thirty plus inch trout caught by George Grohaula (?). The trout was twenty feet out from the bow when we first spotted it, the trout moved off and George must have dropped it in his mouth. As soon as the bait hit the water the trout exploded on his bait. The trout was a scrapper unlike a lot of other gators I have caught in the past he made several laps around the boat with lightning speed. This was George’s first trout ever, (Good job).

The inlet at Ponce has been rough with all the winds this past week making it hard to fish around the rocks. I have heard that there are some small blue fish and mackerel around. The small black drum should be hanging close to the rocks. Be careful fishing close to the rocks a wave is all it takes for you to be sitting on them. Always be prepared to move quickly when fishing close.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
