Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather has been perfect this week and it looks like we are in for just the same for some time. The good thing is the fish will not be feeding on the big moon all night this week. Last week we had to beg the fish to eat a bait and yesterday they were coming out of the water to take our bait. Yesterday we started out with some top water plugging and as the sun floated up we changed to sub surface baits. Tom from Montana joined me and he took twenty trout and six reds to thirty inches.
The Mosquito Lagoon has been holding a lot of jacks and ladyfish that have been breaking up the hot trout action. Look for the big schools of finger mullet and you will find these fish. The clinkers and the main channel are holding its share of these speedsters. I have been throwing 12-Fathom slam’Rs at them in pumpkinseed and pearl colors rigged with a 1/16 oz. Jig head.
If that is not enough action you can fish the many red fish on the flats. These fish are educated so proceed with caution. They know hull slap, live well pump noise and pliers fumble on the deck and will leave the seen of the crime. Some schools are skitzed out while others will sit pretty for you. If you get lucky and find that calm school don’t push them or they will keep going and going. Let them calm down and then approach quietly.
Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
