Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today Todd Ulrich joined me on the flats in the Mosquito Lagoon. We started off our morning throwing top water plugs for some stunt fishing, as we would call it. Fifteen crashes and a hook up seem to be the ratio sometimes. I got a little tired of watching the fish miss the plug so I started doing a plug and switch. That is when you use a top water plug to draw your fish and switch the plug with a finger mullet. It works well.
I was poling Todd across a flat in the lagoon and just behind the boat swam two tarpon about seventy plus. The fish were swimming about three feet past my outboard. I flattened myself to the top of the platform and managed to get a few perfect casts ahead of them before they left our view. They were not interested at all. This is not a common sight on the lagoon flats but I did see a tarpon last week cruising the shallows also. Way cool! Nothing like what I experienced in Flamingo last month but it still was a sight.
The jacks and ladyfish still rule the river and the feed can be explosive. I like throwing a four inch 12 Fathom shad in pearl w/ a black back. These are two fish that don’t know what a fast retrieve means.
Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
