Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
October 10, 2001
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon has been good for redfish and trout this week. The winds started to blow Sunday and will continue for a few more days. The fishing should pick up after the winds subside. The reds we are finding have been on the move or in a sand hole. They are feeding on crabs and finger mullet. Numerous bait schools comb the flats making meal time a snap for a red. With all the bait the reds are fatter than I have ever seen them, usually it is mid December before the reds pork out.

The trout bite slowed in the lagoon this week due to the fresh water run off. However there are some black drum on the flats so keep a shrimp or such loaded for when you do get that shot. Small blacks are very tasty these are the ones to eat not those fat females over fifteen or twenty pounds.

I saw some pompano raid the flat and just as quick as they came, they were gone. If you do see a fast push at on the flats it is usually a school of jacks but every now and then a pompano push will appear. Toss a shrimp far in front of the push because the fish are moving so fast. Talk about pealing line off of an eight-pound outfit.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
