Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Despite all the wind we have had this month we have been able to still catch some good fish. The Mosquito Lagoon has been wind swept leaving portions of it muddy. Finding fish has been easy after you find the clean water. Reds have been combing the flats eating the food least resistant to live. Numerous schools of mullet have been present in the lagoon keeping those reds extra fat. The reds usually don’t fatten up this early in the season but the over abundance of bait has left them very little choice.
The bait of choice is finger mullet or shrimp but we have been taken our share on 12 Fathom jigs. The trout have thinned out a little due to the fresh water running from the creeks and tributaries. Bob Henry and thirteen-year-old son Dawson joined me for a half-day trip. Dawson had caught his first redfish with a total of seven. The two biggest were thirty-one inches long, good job Dawson.
The Indian River is where you would look for linesiders (Snook) around docks and bulkheads. In the river you will also see some very large tarpon, they will be moving south in a month or so. They can be taken on blue crabs, mullet and ladyfish. For the purest toss a 12 Fathom shad body in the chartreuse tiger color.
Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
