Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon this week was awesome, if you picked the day ahead of the front when the fish were chewing. Justen, Jason and Dad Ed Sabatini did just that joining me for a half day of catching this week. I took them to a place that had redfish tails waving as far as you could see. Ed pointed out that we were the only ones in sight, and I replied that is the way I like it. We probed the flat and tossed bait in front of each waving pod of fish. They ended up catching thirty reds and only one of them was below the slot size fish.

This week we had a few trips that we only caught five or so fish. It is not always push button. The fronts and lows that are coming through will shut fishing down making it challenging at times. The four or five fish on these low pressure days are a gift. Speaking of gifts, Brian Dolney caught his first red on an afternoon trip with me, father Chris and grandfather Ed also got to catch reds. Days like this you have to fish slow and hand feed these fish that are hunkering down in the holes.

The trout are also on the flats with the reds. We have caught a few on mullet but most of our trout have fallen for the extractor by 12 Fathom. The tail action in this plastic is unique and can be fished like a top water spinner bait. The reds seem to track the plastic swimming bait when fished on the surface. I have watched fish turn half moon and track the bait, then attack as it makes a bubble trail on the surface. The reds have to lift their backs out of the water to eat it like this. We slowed the retrieve down for the lazy fish we encountered.

Remember: Think like a fish to cath fish.
