Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
February 23, 2002
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today we got rained out and after fishing for the past ten days I was ready for a day off. This week Betsy Swicher and Allen fished on his birthday for the fourth year in a row, they had everything buy the candles. First light they took four snook, three sheepshead, one black drum, one ladyfish and a blue fish, and then we went to the flats to take thirty trout and five reds. Now that is a birthday gift any angler would like to have. The rest of the week we fished the flats where the line siders and channel fish were safe. We caught sixteen reds on shrimp and four trout on soft plastics on another day. The slowest day of the week was when we had winds from the north at twenty-five knots and we still took five nice reds and a flounder. Catching fish on windy days like this is a challenge, I sometimes look forward too them though. I feel it helps when you can produce fish on the worst weather days all the other days that are nice seem like a cakewalk. This also conditions you for those days that are bad you have confidence and a game plan in your pocket that will produce fish. The trout we took were out in the two to three foot of water this week but we did not catch allot of big fish in that depth. The gators are still on the shallow flats and we have been enticing them with slam’Rs in pumpkinseed color. The Xtract’R tails are producing some nice size trout and copper w/ metal fleck seem to work the best now. You can work this soft plastic by 12 Fathom on the surface for explosive crashes or under the surface. On the surface the tail works like a buzz bait and pulls fish to it. This is a new plastic and you will be hearing of allot more catches taken on this bait I guarantee that. Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish!
