Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

This has been another week of crazy weather in the Mosquito Lagoon, one day it is a record high then the next is a record low. Despite all the changes back in forth in the weather the wind has been screaming making it tough on us anglers. Wind has been blowing 20 to 25 kts for a week now. This weekend we had a tournament and caught twenty-five or more fish in that wind all with artificial. We cast soft plastics such as Slam’Rs and Xtract’Rs in pumpkinseed and copper. So the fish don’t care how windy it is as long as they can find your offering. Actually the wind puts oxygen in the water and hypes the fish up like a cop of joe to us. The bait being pushed around by the wind will also get the fish feeding, how many bait fishes could a redfish see blow by before he has had enough teasing.

One of our trips this week we caught sixteen reds on shrimp and four trout on Xtract’Rs in copper metal fleck with a quarter ounce jig head. We have also taken a lot of fish on gold spoons tipped with a plastic tail. Gator trout are up on the flats with these reds seeking warm shallow water and a snack. We took a few gators on the Xtract’Rs maid by 12 Fathom this past week working the plastics ahead of our drift. The water has come up alot and with that rise in the water level the fish have mover a little more to the shallow edge. We caught a few flounder on Xtract’Rs this week working them on the bottom of the white patches on the flats. Well the weather is going to be steady after one or two more fronts and fishing will be push button once again. Oh we also caught three black drum this week fifty, fifty-eight and seventy five pounds on blue crabs. Have you ever asked why they call them blue crabs well when you are on the list of favorites for massive size black drum what else could they be called. Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
