Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon has been hit or miss for the past week due to barometer and wind. But the winds have subsided and things are back to normal, we have been tossing top water plugs on some mornings and getting the snot hammered out of them. Joelle Miller and her son Jonas joined me for a half-day on the flats; they were seeking their first redfish. They caught nine reds to thirty-two inches, even having naves skills they handled the rods like pros. Listening plays a big part in fishing someone telling you not to over wind the reel against the drag can save the line. On another note hearing a fish pop a bait fifty yards away can direct you to the fish. So in order to hear what is going on listen and scan the waters constantly while you are moving along the flats. I have spooked fish from talking before not that it has happens very often but I have witnessed this on several occasions.
The trout are on the flats but we have not targeted them in a while. Today we sight caste to a five-pound trout that fell for a shrimp, he was sitting in a white patch of sand. The reds were tailing on the rise of the moon letting their presence be known. The water was slick all morning making the school of over one hundred fish stick out like a sore thumb. We tossed top water, 12 Fathom plastics and shrimp and caught reds on all three. Jacks, ladyfish and blues can be found in the Indian River and are a blast for a little while. Toss a 12 Fathom shad in pearl W/ black back and hang on.
Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
