Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
April 30, 2002
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon was another roller coaster this week on the numbers wave twelve one day six the next. Greg and son Paul joined me for a half-day on a sight casting extravaganza; reds were the main targets here. While I steadied the Day-5 Tunnel Hull Paul managed to toss a bait perfectly past a white sandy patch. I had alerted him a few seconds earlier that a trout was in the sand at eleven-o clock and I would pole back a few feet. Then Paul began his retrieve across the sand hole then BAM out from the bottom I saw a yellow mouth suck his bait in. Fish on Paul smiled then after landing the fish he explained this was his first gator trout, and to boot he sight casted to it. They also took ten reds in a similar fashion. Roger and Christina Mommens fished with me the next day and took about the same amount of fish, twelve reds to twenty-nine inches. The slowest day of the week was five reds and one trout, and some days we wish we had that.

The North Indian River is giving up its share of flounder in the two-pound range. Work small 12 Fathom jigs along the shores of the ICW on an outgoing tide or beginning of the incoming. I like the pearl with a black back shad or a pearl tiger with a 1/8 or 1/4 ounce jig head. Big schools of finger mullet are flowing out with the tide and along the journey trout, ladyfish and jacks are crashing the party. Showering baits are a good place to start working the school of fingers.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
