Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The week has been a very good one for trophy size fish, starting with Chris Langs eight-pound trout on Monday. Then Bob Sollaccio took a few big reds up to forty-six inches on ten-pound test. One thing you want to make sure when you finish doing battle with these big reds (walk them a long time). Then when you set them free watch them and make sure they don’t roll on you. If they do, net them and walk them or do what you need to do in order to get their oxygen back in their body. Last year it took me thirty minutes to revive a fish that was whooped. I placed the fish overboard and stuck the air stone in his mouth for fifteen minutes before he came too. I only fish the big fish a few times a year do to all the heavy guiding pressure I have seen over the past few years. I have seen as many as ten guides and other boats surround a school of big reds and work them all day. This kind of fishing pressure will alter these big breeding redfish's migration and spawning patterns and result in fewer fish in the future. If you are an angler or guide that wants to take part in a surround and drowned routine on these big breeding reds you may want to think twice. If you do decide to fish big reds catch a couple and move on to another school, if you keep pushing the fish they will freak just like ten boats circling them.
Trout is the game most anglers are fishing for now with pigfish and plastics, my go to bait is the pumpkinseed slamR’s . Work them on the bottom with a eighth ounce jig head when you are fishing in three feet or deeper. You will also catch some bluefish jacks and ladyfish in the mix fishing this way.
Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
