Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
November 21, 2002
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Now that the weather has been more like winter the fish are swimming for the depths. Mostly trout I should say. This time of the year is one of the best times to catch trout and redfish in the numbers. The fish will be bunched up in holes looking for the temperature to be just a few degrees warmer. I must say I have put anglers in quick action on these cold winter days, with some catching over a hundred fish.

I like to fish with 12 Fathom shad bodies or the 12 Fathom slam’R. The shad I like to use this time of the year is the three-inch and a variety of colors work. I like using the pumpkinseed color for the slam’Rs, I rig both with the one-eighth ounce jig head. The larger reds will remain on the flats in fact they are schooled up and moving slow. You can toss a shrimp of finger mullet at them if you don't mind using bait. I prefer the slam’R to a live bait, one reason is I do not want my hands wet all day. Another reason is I produce as many or more fish (more because I spend more time casting verses hooking a bait on). Regardless if you are fishing the holes or the flats you need to slow down your retrieve to math all the other cold blooded creatures in the water. The fish are in their lethargic state and they want your offerings served on a silver platter.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
