Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Wow this week turned out to be a good one for catching. The reds have schooled up on the flats making them easy targets when the wind has been calm. We were targeting reds yesterday and in the mix we caught several gator trout and a flounder. I have noticed the flounder have been moving away from the boats path as we have been working the flats. It is that time of the year when it is not unusual to catch a doormat or two in the by catch. I like tossing 12 Fathom jigs for flounder; it seems you can cover a lot of ground with a jig. A shad pattern (pearl with a black back) works well hooked into a 1/8 or 1/4 oz jig the. I work my jigs slow and steady most of the time but on occasions I will switch my pattern if it is not successful.
The trout are in numbers in the deeper holes due to the colder water. Here again I like working the holes with the same rig but down size the shad body to the three-inch body. Work them slow also rite on the bottom for the best action. If one color does not produce a lot of strikes I change to another color. I also change colors if I am working a hole for an extended period of time just to give them something different to look at. Black drum can be found around the bridges and along with them you can take a sheepshead or two. If you want to catch some nice fish this is the perfect time of year to get into the numbers so call 386 345 0053 Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
