Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the lagoon has been about the same since my last report. The reds are frozen on the flats making them sitting ducks instead of moving targets. They have been in a lethargic state; they should be pretty willing to eat after this weekends jaw freeze goes by. I can’t remember it being this cold, at least for the last few years anyway. I rescheduled my trips for this weekend and will fish next week. The week was nice until the artic blast pushed through on Thursday night.

Ted and Sue Angers joined me for a half-day trip and they got to see both the major feed and the lock jaw side of the red fish. In the morning Sue caught a thirty-inch red on the first cast and a dozen other fish shortly after. Then we moved to our second spot with out the same luck. Then on the third spot we hooked up immediately for a short time and then they wired there jaws shut after that. They ended up catching about twenty nice fish. We worked a flat at the end of the day and saw at least three hundred reds spread out every five yards. We through live shrimp at them and only took one more in that hundred yard stretch.

That is typical when you have the fronts moving through. The first five minutes of fishing that day it was blowing five to ten and the rest of the day it blew twenty-five to thirty out of the north. We had a very successful day considering the elements. I knew it would be a challenge buy sometimes it makes it that much more rewarding when you succeed. The water is still super low and you should take things a little slower if you are not sure. I know some one that spent all night stuck on a sand bar just last week. I would have gone out to rescue them but you never hear about this stuff until they make it back home. Be safe.
