Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week the weather did a turn about and got pretty for us making fish catching a little easier. Jeff Stalinga and Tony joined me for a half-day trip yesterday and got to see schools of trout like they never had. I have been fishing this particular flat to target redfish lately and the trout have been accompanying them. Then again they have been coming back every winter since I started fishing this flat in 1980.

The school of reds had been pusher off the flat so we decided to target the trout. I used the trolling motor to go up wind of the trout planning on fishing them downwind. This will allow us to make long cast far ahead of our drift. We tossed live shrimp to them on our upwind journey and they shunned every offering. I told my guest that I knew just the lure that would catch these big trout ( a 12 Fathom slam'R ). I dropped the anchor just up wind of the area that the trout were l! aying and they began to cast the lures ahead of the boat. A few minutes go by and Jeff and Tony both catch a trout. The trout fell for that irresistible plastic and Tony lands his largest trout ever. Several drifts and a limit of trout and a red in the box were making the start of the Saturday morning a success. The next spot we were going was crowded with boats so I took them to a place that we could catch trout in the numbers. We took about twelve more trout before calling it a day. The days before this we targeted reds and took quite a few on every trip. The water is still low in the lagoon so be cautious before plowing onto a flat you are not sure about.
