Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

It was nice out on the water this week, but the last two days have been perfect. Not just the weather but the fishing as well. I just got home from a trip and had Rick Montz and his dad out for a half day. We started our day with flat calm water and plenty of reds pushing as I made my way to a spot I had in mind. I couldn’t believe it when I made the corner and no one was in sight. I dropped the trolling motor down and began to make our way to the fish. Within minutes I was pointing redfish tails out to Rick and his dad. It was so calm that we had to toss our bait twenty feet in front of the fish so they would not spook. In the hour we fished there, we caught twenty reds. In that hour, five boats had moved in on us so it was time to go.
Then I took them to a trout spot that was holding some gators. We put out the baits and shortly after we had a gator, a few minutes more another. They fell for finger mullet and 12 Fathom slam’Rs in the pumpkinseed color. We pulled the hooks on a few more that would make another day a success. Plenty of trout can be caught along the many Clinker Islands that line the channel in the Mosquito Lagoon. I like using plastics myself, but if you like live baiting, finger mullet is the ticket. The water is still extremely low and I see boats plowing onto the flats daily. A little word of advice: If you don’t know, go slow.
