Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
February 28, 2003
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

This has been a rollercoaster week as far as the weather goes. Perfect one day then rain for the next three. Yesterday we caught small grouper, sheepshead, grouper, mangrove snapper and some black drum. We were fishing Haulover canal with live shrimp just to change the pase from the flats. The day before Betsy and Allen joined me on the flats for some quick action in the morning catching trout to five pounds and eight reds with three of them over the slot size. Then we went to Haulover and caught four black drum and a few sheepshead. The days before we spent our time catching tailing redfish on the flats with a gator trout or two in the mix.

For the most part we have been casting shrimp at our targets but 12 Fathom slam’Rs are the artificial bait of choice. The water has come up about a foot in the last week and it is making it a bit easier for anglers to get around. The fish are also spread out a little more due to the increase of weter level. We also caught a few flounder last week in our mix, that were caught on shrimp. On one charter last week my clients wanted to catch trout and did not want to fish plastics. So out came the cast net and we bagged a few dozen-finger mullet. Seven good trout eight reds and a relaxing day watching the fish pop tethered finger mullet was exciting. Nothing like seeing a gator trout popping a scared mullet. Looks like rain for the next four charters then perfect weather in our sights. Catch em up.
