Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
March 28, 2003
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing has been a little slower this week with the storms that we had and plenty of shrimp in the river. We are still catching fish but not as many as we did in the winter months. The fish are a little spread out due to the water level coming up higher making the field allot larger. Shrimp and 12 Fathom plastics tossed in the white holes have been producing the majority of the fish. You can still find the singles swimming the shallows adding a little more challenge to sight casting.

Trout to six pounds are coming off the flats using top water plugs and switching to slan’Rs mid morning. Trout can also be taken along the flats drop offs in about two to five foot of water. Most of them are on the small side with ever tenth one being legal. Sheepshead and black drum are found on the channel edges and by the bridges. Shrimp and small crabs are the bait of choice for these critters. For the big blacks use a whole crab and weight it on the bottom. Watch that rod tips because they feed very soft, you may not even see your rod move. Remember the big black drum are not very good to eat and are loaded with worms. It is recommended that you release these fish to help keep up the stocks of the excellent tasting smaller ones.
