Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

This has been another beautiful week in east central Florida with sunny days and cool nights. The fishing has been just as good with reds milling the flats and gator trout in the white patches. A few days ago I fished Bill Rohm and Sam from Rex spoons. We took most of our reds on shrimp, but at the end of the day we tossed a Rex spoon for a short time and bagged the largest for that day. The trout can be caught on live finger mullet and shrimp, but my bait of choice is the 12 Fathom slam’R in the pumpkinseed color. Jacks are also roaming the flats and before long ladyfish in massive schools will be boiling the water eating finger mullet.
We have been putting a little time fishing for black drum with success on every trip. Todd Ulrich and Alex got to experience a sixty-five and a seventy-pound fish. A few days later we filmed a TV show and caught two more one going seventy-five pounds and the other over eighty. The show will air in three weeks on the Outdoor sportsman channel. Sometimes the bites come slow but when you hook up you can battle one of these brutes for thirty minutes or so. Blue crabs are my bait of choice placed on the bottom. These large drum are not that good to eat, they are laced with worms and are twenty years and older. The small black drum are very good table fair and if we keep releasing the larger fish there will be plenty of small ones. Remember think like a fish to catch fish.
